Murray State enters the week with a chance to extend their winning streak to nine in their matchups against Morehead State and Austin Peay.
Sophomore guard Ja Morant took care of business for the Racers last week, propelling the team to a 85-75 win over UT Martin and a 103-67 blowout victory over Southeast Missouri State. Morant averaged 26.5 points, 11.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in the Racer’s two victories.
Morant received his eighth OVC Player of the Week honor following his commanding performances, tying Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried for most POTW awards in a season.
Junior forward Darnell Cowart continued his stellar play in the Racer wins, averaging 17 points and 12.5 rebounds on his way to receiving “Newcomer of the Week” honors from the OVC.
This week, the Racers will split time between home and away, traveling five hours to Morehead, Ky. for their matchup with the Eagles before heading home for senior night against Austin Peay.
Murray State defeated the Eagles comfortably last time out, winning 90-69 at home on Jan. 3. Morehead State will be handed a tall order in its attempt to take down a red hot Murray State team that has won eight of its last 10 contests.
The final home game of the season and senior night will take place on March 2, when Austin Peay travels 67 miles to Murray for a rematch with the Racers.
Murray State left Clarksville with a 73-71 victory in the team’s last meeting as a tip-in at the buzzer was waved off after further review.
The Racers will look to stop a hot Austin Peay squad that has strung together three consecutive victories over Morehead State, UT Martin and SEMO.
All eyes will be on the head-to-head battle between Governor sophomore forward Terry Taylor and Murray State’s Cowart. Taylor torched the Racers for 25 points and eight rebounds last time around.
This weekend’s matchup offers each team a chance to improve their point total in the Heritage Bank Battle of the Border. Teams receive three points for each victory in game between Racers and Governors. Murray State currently leads 18-9, but things could quickly change with a Governor sweep of men’s and women’s basketball this weekend.
The Racers will take on Morehead State at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, and APSU at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. If you can’t catch the Racers in person, you can watch live on ESPN+ or listen in on Froggy 103.7.
