Maintaining self-care during finals week

The end of the semester is quickly approaching at Murray State University.

With final tests, assignments and projects coming up, students often forget to take the time to care for themselves properly. Take a step back from studying and check on yourself with these self-care tips.

Sleep

As trivial as it sounds, get some sleep. Students usually spend hours and hours cramming in the library for finals and it goes neglected. Taking the time to sleep is so much better in the long run. According to Stanford University, college students need eight hours of sleep to function well. While not everyone can do that, take a few hours out of your day to catch some z’s. Your body, mind and soul will thank you for it.

Drink lots of water

There is nothing better than staying hydrated. Drinking water helps to improve your mental performance and overall is good for you. If you have trouble remembering to drink water, set reminders on your phone to help you start a routine of doing it. Add the Water Drink Reminder or the My Water Balance app to your phone to help you stay on track. If water is too plain for your tastes, try adding lemon or other fruits to jazz it up.

Move your body

Staying in the same position for hours isn’t good for you. It’s important to take breaks from studying to exercise or even just walk around for a little. According to Harvard Medical School, exercise improves brain health by strengthening memory and thinking skills. Students can always go to the gym on campus or walk the loop with friends to get outside in the sun.

Cuddle with animals

Nothing de-stresses people more than some animal love. Take the time to get some good cuddles from your pets; they need your love and attention as much as you need theirs. If you don’t have pets, go to the Humane Society-Calloway County or the Murray-Calloway County Animal shelters in Murray. Animals there definitely need that love and attention, too.

Take music breaks

Always, always take breaks. Put on your favorite music and dance the stress away. Sometimes there is nothing better than screaming lyrics at the top of your lungs then getting back to business. Music is a great escape from responsibilities every now and then.

Hang out with friends

Taking a step back from studying and making plans with friends is such a good thing to do toward the end of the semester. Being around people who can make you laugh and fill your life with positivity is crucial for your mental health. Your friends are there to make you feel better so take advantage of that whenever possible, just make sure you return the favor for your friends, too.

Eat your favorite meal

Sometimes nothing makes you feel better when feeling overwhelmed than eating your favorite food. Getting to set down and really enjoy something you’re eating just warms your soul. Take the time out of your study time to fill your belly with joy and goodness. According to snapfitness, a well-balanced meal provides important vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to keep the body and mind strong and healthy.
