Republican incumbent Matt Bevin and Democratic challenger Andy Beshear offered their views on higher education and the pension crisis during the first of five gubernatorial debates Thursday in Paducah.
The debate at the Julian Carroll Convention Center in Paducah was part of the Paducah Chamber of Commerce’s Power in Partnership series.

The debate included opening and closing statements, as well as questions from a four-person media panel.

Topics discussed included:
- Chinese and other foreign investments,
- job creation,
- funding for higher education,
- the pension crisis,
- Kentucky’s opioid crisis,
- the incarceration rate,
- and others.

What Comes Next
The two opponents will face off in four more televised debates throughout the month of October. The dates are:
Oct. 15 – WKYT and the League of Women Voters in Lexington,
Oct. 26 – WLKY and the League of Women Voters in Lexington,
Oct. 28 – KET in Lexington,
Oct. 29 – WLWT and Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.
The last debate will be on Tuesday, Oct. 29—one week before Election Day.
