Adultish Takes Travel

Welcome back to Adultish!

This week’s edition of Adultish takes on travel, something that many young adults are accustomed to doing with family, but not on their own. The Guide talks COVID-19 updates, work trips, vacations and study abroad trips. The MKY Guide editor-in-chief, Carly Middleton hosts, joined by assistant editor-in chief, Amy Turner, and audio-video coordinator, Meg Reynolds.

Travel can be intimidating at first, but keeping in mind the following tips, you can pack your bags and explore the world care-free.

Work Trips

Tip #1: Make a list of things you need to pack weeks in advance of your trip. As you remember things you will need, add them to the list to be sure you won’t forget them.

Tip #2: Always pack basic necessities and a professional outfit in your carry-on bag. You never know what could go wrong, so it’s best to prepare for the worst. If your luggage gets lost or your flight gets delayed, you’ll have everything you need right there with you in your carry-on.

Tip #3: Keep in mind that every interaction is an interview. The way you act at cocktail parties, flights, car rides, restaurants, etc., is a reflection of how yourself as a professional.

Vacations

Tip #1: Enter into the trip with lots of flexibility. Lots of variables can change your plans. Especially weather, which you have no control over. Back-up plans are key, here.

Tip #2: Try to plan trips during slow seasons, usually during the winter or before peak season, such as wedding and honeymoon season. Each place differs, so research it before you book!

Tip #3: Lastly, scrolling really can wait. Don’t travel to places completely based on what you think your social media followers will like. This is your vacation, and your time with family and friends. Be in the moment and document what comes naturally to you.

Study Abroad Trips

Tip #1: Get the phone numbers of your classmates and your professors, if possible. This might seem simple, but it’s easy to forget. In case of an emergency or if you get separated, you can call or text them. It’s also a good idea store the number for the US embassy and any other personal data you might need. The Education Abroad program will often have you do this at your orientation, but it’s good to remember anyway.

Tip #2: Book excursions before you travel. It’s so tempting to figure it out when you get there, but you can save lots of time and money if you have researched what excursions you want to do. There will be so many options, so it is key to plan every night carefully. Allow time for rest, too, so you can enjoy the trip.

Tip #3: Don’t be afraid to talk to the locals. One of Carly’s assignments had her interview people on the streets, and it was the best part of the trip. People are willing to share about their culture, so be willing to ask them questions. You’ll be surprised what you will learn.
