If you’ve ever spent any amount of time in the MKY, you know why March 1 and Oct. 31 are dates circled in many calendars.
Murray’s Dairy Queen opened for the season Friday, March 1. Although clouds loomed over the iconic sign and temperatures hovered in the upper 30s, Murrayans still turned out to get their first Blizzard of the season or a chili dog or a dipped ice cream cone. Shortly before 5 p.m., the line extended out to Main Street.
What makes the Murray Dairy Queen so iconic and so beloved? It’s one of the last walk-up counter DQs in the country, and unlike other DQs, the Murray ice cream shop has a limited menu and only operates for six months each year.

Even temperatures in the upper 30s couldn’t stop Murrayans from waiting in line to get tasty treats at DQ.
